Jazz Chat with Copeland’s Own Traci Wynn

Traci Wynn at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta

Since 1999 Traci has graced Copeland’s with her smooth and straight ahead jazz music. We wanted to know where she gets her inspiration and what motivates the genius behind the saxophone.

Traci grew up in Los Angeles and found her passion for music from her step father Sam Cross Jr. Mr. Cross played sax for legends like James Brown, Tina Turner and The Temptations. After growing up listening to impromptu jam sessions, Traci decided to pick up a sax herself. Since then she has been touring and playing around the world and keeps her home base here in Atlanta.

As most already know, Copeland’s hosts live jazz every Friday night and Sunday morning for brunch, to feature great artists such as Traci. She plays standards and jazz of all types as well as her own original music. The kids who gather around the stage at the brunch love it so much that they nick named her the ‘pied piper of jazz’.

The Original Pied Piper

Her funky renditions and her take on standards like “All of Me” and “Round Midnight” capture the hearts of audiences both young and old. Some of her variations are:

  1. Bee-Bop like Charlie Parker’s Ornithology. This even inspired Traci to write a song called “Father’s Day”, a form of ‘straight ahead jazz’.
  2. Smooth Jazz like Marvin Gaye’s R&B hit “What’s Going On”, or even Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” can all be heard in her passionate stylings.

What Traci brings to Copeland’s no matter what you are listening to, is soft, beautiful and relatable music for all ages. Traci says, “my funky tunes are reminiscent of artists such as Stanley Clark; or my tune Joe Beam which is a dedication to Antonio Carlos Jobim, inspired from the works of saxaphone great Stan Getz and his work passionately called The Bossa Nova years.”
